Funeral services for Johanna F. Franzen, 94, were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 5 in Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Titonka with Pastors Kim and Trudy Peterson officiating.

Mrs. Franzen died at the Titonka Care Center Thursday, February 1, 1990. ... She married Herman Franzen on February 19. 1920 at the home of her parents. They lived their entire married life on the same farm. They retired and moved into Titonka in 1959. Her husband passed away in 1971. ... Johanna is survived by ... Francis Eugene Culbertson was born September 2, 1932, in rural Lone Rock, Iowa, the son of Merle and Edna (Meyer) Culbertson. He attended school in Seneca and later graduated from Seneca High School in 1948.

On July 2, 1951, Francis was united in marriage to Delores Franzen at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Following their marriage they lived in Ringsted for a year before moving back to the Titonka area where Francis helped build the church. The next year he began farming northeast of Titonka. In 1991, they moved into Titonka, but continued to farm until retiring in 1994. Delores died on November 3, 1994. Francis was remarried to Velma Nelson on April 14, 1996, at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Francis enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, farming, playing cards and board games, bowling and woodworking. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Francis died on Monday, December 6, 2010, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. He was 78.

He is survived by his wife, Velma of Titonka; his children, Ladonna (Bill) Schaack of Grundy Center; Douglas Culbertson of Titonka; Joyce (Terry) Elman of Buffalo Center; Nancy (Cliff) Axness of Titonka; Bruce (Millie) Culbertson of Titonka; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; step-children, Larry (Vicky) Nelson of Titonka; Deb (Randy) Johnson of Swea City; step daughter-in-law, Carolyn Nelson of North Washington; sisters, Shirley Hagenson of Spirit Lake; Sylvia (Chet) Tabor of Dallas, TX; Kathleen (Skip) Quastad of Estherville; LaRue Bradshaw of Arnolds Park; Sandy (Darrell) Walsh of Greers Ferry, AR; Connie (Bob) Monk of Roanoke, IL; brothers, Garry (Kathy) Culbertson of Estherville; Emery (Rosie) Culbertson of Emmetsburg; Danny (Joyce) Culbertson of Greers Ferry, AR; sister-in-law, Dolores Culbertson of Ingham Lake and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delores and brothers, Lyle and Gordon Culbertson.
