Note: Fred was born in the kingdom of Hanover in Eastfriesland, Germany, the youngest of four brothers. His father was killed in the war of 1870, the mother died of black smallpox, when he was six years old. From the age of six tofourteen he was cared for in an orphanage. When he left the orphanage he worked on a farm for two years. At the age of 16 he left the old country, being assisted by friends who made it possible for him to emigrate to the United States(immigration would have been about 1881). In America, he came to the German settlement at Ackley, Iowa. Fred had a brother Warren Waalkes and the 1930 census has him immigrating in 1881 so they may have come over together.
