Mr. Heyer was ordained May 1914 at Winona, Minnesota. Their first pastorate was at Eldridge, Iowa. In the summer of 1915 the Heyers movedto Holland, Minnesota where they accepted their second pastorate andremained there until 1924 atwhich time he accepted the pastorate of theFirst Presbyterian Church in Rushmore, Minnesota, where in spite of hisblindness, he served faithfully until he retired in June of 1953. Atthis time they moved into their retirement home acrossthe alley andcontinued to serve as Pastor Emeritus. He married his only daughter inthe First Presbyterian Manse in Rushmore, Minnesota.
As early as 1893 Mr Heyer showed signs of losing his eye sight. Hecontinued normal activities until it became apparent that he would lose his sight completely. He was then enrolled in the School for the Blindat Vinton, Iowa, where helearned to read Point Print, which is similar to Braille. Mr. Heyer had keen perception, traveling about by using his cane and counting steps, remembering voices and hearing things that the sighted person does not hear. He served asmoderator twice at the Mankato Presbytery. He also learned and did many domestic activities to help around the house, as it was necessary for Mrs. Heyer and Elizabeth to spend much time in reading and writing for him. He was a remarkableman.
