Doris May Rogers

Source: Author: Larson, Char, Title: e-mail regarding William Jacob Rogers, (Publication location unknown, Publisher: CL, Publication date: xxiv Nov MMXI)

"... Just got back from Marshall, Minnesota where we had a noon meal with my sister and her family.

Yes, my connection is William Jacob Rogers. Ethel Rowley was my aunt.

William died in 1920 in Murray County and is buried in the Wilmont Cemetery. There were four children in the family-Ethel the youngest-my mother, Doris who was 5 years old when her father died and two boys Alvin and Clifford.

The children were placed in the different Rogers households when my grandmother remarried. Her second husband did not want anything to do with her children of her first marriage. It was not easy for the kids and they use to run awayfrom the homes they were in to be together. Ethel had it a little easier then my mother. She was the youngest and lived with Great Grandma and Grandpa Rogers. Ethel was able to attend school where my mother was more of a servant.

I never knew I had a Grandmother until I was 18 years old. My mother liked [sic] to talk about her life growing up.

The four children did keep in contact with each other until the time of their deaths. ... Char"

Doris was born in Bloom Township, MN to William and Evelyn Coyer Rogers. She grew up with her uncles in the Wilmont and Reading area and attended country school. On June 18, 1947 she and Gerald Ricketts were married in Slayton, MN. Following their marriage they farmed in Bear Lake Woods Lowville Township, Murray County, MN and raised their four children. Gerald passed away on September 18, 1968. Doris remained on the farm and worked at Odenbrett's cleaning chicken for many years. She then worked at Pennee Frocks Manufacturing in Slayton and later at Wonder World in Slayton. In July 2006 she became a resident of the Golden Living Center-Slayton. She was a member of the Hadley Golden Club. Her friends were very important to her and she spent many hours helping them by driving them around to appointments. Doris enjoyed bingo, visiting with friends, quilting, playing games, gardening, and feeding the birds and cats. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, fishing with her grandchildren, and deer-hunting season when her family was all around.

Doris & Gerald are the parents of: Joyce Wendorff, Charlotte Larson, Charles Ricketts, & deceased daughter Bernice Harman.

Doris' siblings include Clifford and Alvin Rogers, and one sister, Ethel Rowley.
