"Ernest G. Ebel, 63, a retired Cleveland patrolman familiar to thousands of Clevelanders, was killed instantly at 11:30 yesterday morning when his automobile was struck by a New York Central freight train at the Pleasant Street crossing in Wakeman, O.

Ebel joined the force April 4, 1913, and was assigned to the then novel traffic squad, and all of his 30 years in the department were spent directing downtown traffic. For the last 10 years of his service, he was on duty at thepedestrian crossing between the Arcade and the Main Public Library on Superior Avenue N. E.

Service in Co. B., 11 Infantry Regiment, for three years along the Mexican border, beginning in 1909, gave Ebel a taste for outdoor life, and led indirectly to his joining the Cleveland department. On retirement he bought a small farmin Wakeman. He was only a few hundred yards from his home when he was killed.

Dog Dies With Him.

Killed with him was his dog. In the short time he had lived in Wakeman, both Ebel and his dog, which was his inseparable companion, had become part of the village scene.

At the time of his death Ebel was employed as a watchman by the Romec Pump Co. in Elyria.

He is survived by his wife, Lela Hill Ebel; three daughters, Mrs. Clarence Navorska of Olmsted Falls, Mrs. Frank Webber of Strongsville and Mrs. George Donnelly of Toledo; four sons, Edward of Cleveland and Joseph, Lincoln and Martin ofWakeman; 23 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, and two sisters, Mrs Mary Grossmehr of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mrs Louise Cheer of Fort Worth, Tex.

Services will be held in the Gerber funeral home, Wakeman, at 2 p. m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Wakeman Cemetery."

Residences: 2131 W67th St., Cleveland, OH on 20 Sept 1909 & 10 Feb 1914.

Originally, Ebel was pronounced 'Abel,' but confusion in applying payments on a credit account led to the decision to change the pronunciation to an 'e' sound such as in 'éclair.'
