Gladys Van Briesen, age 92 of George, Iowa died Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center in George, Iowa. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 4th at Zoar Presbyterian Church, east of George with burial in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery west of George,.

Gladys (Duin) Van Briesen was born June 19, 1916, on a farm northeast of George, Iowa the daughter of Herman F. and Tillie (Janssen) Duin. Gladys was raised on the family farm northeast of George. She attended Grant Township #3 Country School.

On September 1, 1937, she was united in marriage to Walter Van Briesen at George. They made their home on the family farm from 1937 until 1963 when they moved into George. For eighteen years she worked as a school cook at the George Community School. On November 11, 1988, Walter died ending their marriage of fifty-one years. Gladys continued to live in their home in George. She enjoyed embroidering, gardening, cooking, doing cross word puzzles and word search, and attending Ladies Aid. She was a longtime member of Zoar Presbyterian Church of George where she was active in women's circle. On November 21, 2008, Gladys became a resident of the George Good Samaritan Center where she died this past Saturday evening, January 31, 2009, at the age of ninety-two.

She is survived by her children, Thelma Van Briesen of George; Larry and his wife, Carol Van Briesen of Ellsworth, Minnesota; La Donn and her husband, Norwood Geerdes of George; and Paul and his wife, Angela Van Briesen of George; nine grandchildren, Tyron (Kim) Geerdes; Todd (Roxie) Geerdes; Craig (Jessica) Van Briesen; Cory (Angie) Van Briesen; Carla (Jamie) Rokusek; Drew Van Briesen; Ethan Van Briesen; Dalton Van Briesen and Brandon Van Briesen; also eight great grandchildren, T.J., Zach, Grant, and Amber Geerdes; Aubrey, Sawyer, Kyra, and Caden Van Briesen; along with one brother, Herbert Duin of Rushmore, Minnesota; and one sister-in-law, Verna Duin of George.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Tillie; husband, Walter; daughter, Doris and her husband, Lawrence Stubbe; sisters, Maybelle Duin and Julia Bonk; brothers, Fred H. F. and John Duin and infant twin brothers.
