Notes for EUGENE WILLIAM BEAL: Passed away at home on Sunday, June 15, 1997, Fathers' Day. He was home from the hospital only two hours. 5 weeks earlier he had been diagnosed with acute mylogenetic leukemia.

Eugene grew up on the family farm on Shadel Road near Bailey, OH, which is between Grand Rapids and Waterville, OH. He was inducted into the US Navy on Jan. 27, 1944, during WWII. He served on LST 40 and LST 838 in the Pacific Ocean (LST = Landing Ship Tank which carried tanks and troops in beachhead invasions). He saw 19 months of active duty, mostly as a Shipfitter. He received the following medals: Point System, Victory Medal, Phillipine Liberation Medal, American Area Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Medal (with one star).

He worked at Cables Alfalfa Mill in Tontogany and in Hoytville, always making his home in Grand Rapids, OH. They married when she was 18 and he was 21. They went toHawaii for their 50th wedding anniversary, a gift from their children. Gene and Grace vacationed every winter in FL and in 1986 bought a mobile home in Palmetto, FL to enjoy their retirement winters. Grace sold the mobil home to herneice Patsy in 2004.

He was somewhat of a jack-of-all-trades, as he could fix or make just about anything.
