Son of William Stoppelmoor & Grace Naber. He married Eva Margaret Ethel Bahr. Parents of Gary & Linda Stoppelmoor.

Laverne Walter Stoppelmoor, 90, of Dows, died on Sunday, February 20, 2005, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral services were held on Friday, February 25, at the First Lutheran Church in Dows, with Pastor Paul Thompson officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery near Dows. The Dows Community Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Organist was Phyllis Wesenberg. There was special music by the men's chorus. Ushers were Don and Pat Lane. Casket bearers were Kim Nester, Gary Stoppelmoor, Kathy Marca, Greg Stoppelmoor, Kris Herstein, Nicole Hoversten and Shannon Muhlenbruch.

Laverne Walter was born June 17, 1914 at Aplington, the first child of William and Grace Stoppelmoor. He attended school in Blairsburg.

Laverne married Eva Bahr on September 24, 1937, at the St. Paul Lutheran parsonage in Alden. After a farm sale in 1956, Laverne and Eva retired from farming at Dows.

He was employed as a mechanic at Braun's Repair, a police officer for the town of Dows for two years, bought a milk truck and hauled milk for eight years, and hauled feed for seven years for the Dows Coop. He retired at 62 to take care of Eva.

Laverne was a member of the Vernon Lutheran Church and joined First Lutheran after they moved to town. He served as deacon and trustee. He was a fireman for 40 years, serving in many offices. He later became an honorary fireman known as "Pappy".

Laverne and Eva traveled to Florida and California to visit their grandchildren whenever possible. He enjoyed fishing, camping, yard and garden work, canning and making jelly, and he made cookies for his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife; parents; brothers, Lawrence and Floyd; sister, Dorothy Spitler; brothers-in-law, Sid Thompson, Frank Welsh, Bob Srigley and Chuck Bahr; sisters-in-law, Wilma Stoppelmoor, Bonnie Stoppelmoor and Norma LaRue; daughter-in-law, Peggy; and grandson, Gary DiLiello.

Survivors are son, Gary of California; daughter, Linda (Darwyne) of Alden; grandchildren, Kim (Chris) Nester, Gary Stoppelmoor Jr., Kathy Marca, Greg (Eva) Stoppelmoor, Kris (Steve) Herstein, Nicole (Kory) Hoversten, Shannon (Carla) Muhlenbruch; step-granddaughter, Geana Scheer; great-grandchildren, Logan, Kortny, Ted, Rianna, Garrett, Hanna, Matthew, Nicholas, Scott, Mikyla, Katlyn, Gabrielle, Henry, Grace, Victoria and Lindsey; sisters, Viora Welsh and Ruby Ann Thompson; and brothers, Sterling and Ernie (Nancy) Stoppelmoor.
