'Plane crash victims' mother dies in Castalia home fire

CASTALIA - A 78-year-old woman was found dead in her bedroom with the telephone at her feet after a file gutted her home early this morning. Possible cause of death is smoke inhalation.

Thelma Stadler, 7708 Parker Road, was found on her bed by Margaretta Township firemen. Chief Dale Zwicker said she was apparently overcome by smoke before she could alert the firemen to the scene. Firemen were called by neighbors whoseown house filled with smoke.

Chief Zwicker said a night light on the kitchen stove may have shorted and started the fier, engulfing the home in flames before firemen arrived. The fire spread up the kitchen stairs to the second floor where Mrs. Stadler's bedroom waslocated.

Damage to the two-story wood frame home was estimated at $28,000 and $10,000 to the contents.

She was the mother of John and David Stadler who died in a plane crash in Oregon in February 1976. Her body was taken to the Andres-Tucker Funeral Home in Sandusky. Her obituary appears on page 10.

Chief Zwicker said this is the first fatality due to a fire in the township since 1973 ...'
