Funeral services for Maynard Smith will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2014 at the First United Mehtodist Church with Reverand Steve McElroy officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be (Today)Thursday, May 1, 2014, from 4-8 p.m. at Oakcrest Funeral Services.

Maynard Lee Smith was born May 2, 1939, in Thompson, the son of R. Floyd and and Maxine (Kingsbury) Smith. He grew up and atttended school in Thompson. After his schooling he joined the military and served the country in the United States Army.

On April 14, 1959, while still serving in the Army, Maynard was united in marriage to Gerlinde 'Jenny' Heinz at Frankfurt, Germany.

Maynard Lee Smith was born May 2, 1939, in Thompson, the son of R. Floyd and and Maxine (Kingsbury) Smith. He grew up and atttended school in Thompson. After his schooling he joined the military and served the country in the UnitedStates Army.

On April 14, 1959, while still serving in the Army, Maynard was united in marriage to Gerlinde 'Jenny' Heinz at Frankfurt, Germany. After an honorable discharge they returned to Thompson where Maynard worked at the Creamery for a shorttime before moving to Algona in 1962. Maynard worked various jobs before beginning to drive truck for Bituminous Supply. He later started his own trucking company, which he ran for 19 years, before going to drive for another company.He retired in 2003.

Maynard had a great love for his family and the time he was able to spend with them, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting, restoring old guns and tractors, racing, listening to country music, building birdhouses and justtinkering.

Maynard died Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. He was 74.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 55 years, Jenny Smith of Algona; children: Jim and Pam Smith of Sexton; Ricky Joe and Amy Smith of Algona; Ronda and Mike Tietz of Algona; grandchilddren: Dustin (Lisa) Smith; Michelle Tietz;Matthew Smith; Megan Tietz; Melissa Tietz; Alex Smith; Abby Smith; Betheny Smith; Kenny Tietz; Teagan Smith; and a great-granddaughter; Kendra Smith. Also surviving is a brother, Gary and Pam Smith of Rosenburg, Texas; and ahalf-brother, Michael and Angela Friesenborg of Corwith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Maxine, and step-father, Herbert 'Mike' Friesenborg, and four brothers, Ray, Keith, James and Robert Smith.

Arrangements are being handled by Oakcrest Funeral Services of Algona. Condolences may be left at www.oakcrestfuneralservices.com."
