1900 Census

Eggie (56) and his wife Jennie (47) were living in Lincoln Township, Winnebago County, Iowa on 23 June 1900. Eggie and Jennie had been married for 29 years. Eggie was a Farmer and rented his farm. Jennie immigrated between 24 June and 31December 1861. Eggie was now a Naturalized Citizen. Both were born in Germany as were their respective parents. Unfortunately, it is shown that neither could read or write. This is quite unusual since all of his siblings were literate.Perhaps the respondent thought this question was in regard to English. Eggie could speak English but Jennie could not. Jennie had had twelve children, seven of whom were still living. Six of the seven (Michael, Sina, Oltman, Ida, Dick &Thomas) are listed as living with the family and they were all born in Iowa.
