Lalia B. (Root) Alwood (August 12, 1920 - March 23, 2007)

Lalia B. Alwood of Ceresco and formerly of Burlington went to live with her Lord and Savior on March 23, 2007 at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence in Battle Creek following a brief illness brought on by a stroke. Lalia was born on August 12, 1920 in Battle Creek, MI, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Abbott) Root. She graduated from Lakeview High School, class of 1938.

Lalia married Lester "Pat" Alwood on June 15, 1940 in Wauseon, Ohio. He preceded her in death. Together they had six children. Lalia was a homemaker most her life, she had many hobbies and was a member of many clubs and served on many committees. She was on the Centennial Committee for 10 years, Library Board four years, Light Up Burlington Committee for two years, Cancer Crusade Committee for 25 years, she was on a bowling team for 18 years, where she earned severaltrophies, Homecoming Committee, Burling Booster Club, Burlington Mother's Club, Burlington Village Council, CAA Site Supervisor for 18 years, she worked on the Burlington Bugle for many years, and she belonged to the Pedro Club for 25years. Lalia was also voted Citizen of the Year in 1996.

Lalia loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, she also loved to travel and she had traveled to 48 states. She loved to crochet afghans, towels and potholders to sell at craft shows. One of her favorite things to do washaving her children come over to her home every Saturday and Sunday mornings for coffee. Lalia was a wonderful woman with a very giving heart: she will be dearly missed by everyone that knew her.

She is survived by her sons, Louis Alwood of Tekonsha, David "Doc" (Rose) Alwood of Union City, Norman (Glenda) Alwood of Burlington, James "Jim" (Beverly) Alwood of Ceresco; daughters, Phyllis (Ron) Amsler of Burlington and Nancy(Richard) Tillotson of Coldwater; 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a brother, Racine Root.

Visitation will at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home on Sunday where the family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 and 5:00 to 7:00. A service to celebrate the gift of her life will be held 11:00 am Monday, March 26, 2007 at the funeralhome with Reverend Wayne Halbleib officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeralhome.
