Op 1 april 1940 ging ik in militaire dienst bij het 20-ste regiment infanterie, in de Palm kazerne in Laren (NH). Ik kreeg er de opleiding voor onderofficier.,
Op 30 april 1940 parade voor Koningin Wilhelmina, die voor het hotel-restaurant Hof van Holland in Hilversum stond.
Op 10 mei brak de oorlog uit.
Om 2 uur s' nachts met volle bepakking en scherpe munitie op appel (het lood kon uit de patroontassen).
Meteen op wacht ten noorden van de kazerne, de weg naar Amsterdam, waarlangs nog de tramlijn naar Amsterdam lag, de zogenoemde Gooische moordenaar.
Wij moesten zoeken/controleren op zgn. Duitse parachute springers, die zich met auto's vervoerden, zogenaamd 21-22 opletten.
In die zelfde nacht marcheerde de hele kazerne en het kamp Laren, totaal 7000 man, naar de Grebbeberg, waaronder al mijn kennissen. Wij moesten 2 dagen wachten.
De 12e mei gingen wij naar Oudewater en werden ingekwartierd bij boer Snoek in Willeskap. Wij waren met 10 man en reden in een mooie Chevrolet, gevorderd van een burger. We rijden zonder licht, en met een gedetailleerde kaart van de onderofficier, via allerlei weggetjes naar Linschoten en Oudewater.
In augustus ben ik als krijgsgevangene ontslagen. Ik had geen werk. Na een jaar werd ik in Amersfoort opgeroepen, maar ik zag het niet zitten en ben weer naar huis gegaan.
Daarna was het wel oppassen geblazen voor N.S.B.ers.
Na het geval van Rauter op de Woeste Hoeve, waar 100 mensen als repressaille werden doodgeschoten, werd het mij te warm onder de voeten. Mijn a.s. schoonvader Busser uit Beekbergen belde op om te waarschuwen. Ik had n.l. voor het verzet geweren schoongenaakt. Op de fiets vertrok ik met 6 pond roggebrood.........
Busser is door de bezetter uit huis gehaald, en er is nooit meer iets van hem vernomen.
Na omzwervingen ben ik in het krijgsgevangen kamp Warendorf terecht gekomen. Na enkele vergeefse ontsnappingspogingen , lukte het en belandde ik in oktober 1944 in de Keizer (hotel) te Deventer. Maar ik kon de Yssel niet over naar mijn huis in Twello.
Tot april 1945, voor de kost, in het hotel geholpen Duitse officieren 's nachts naar boven te brengen.Ik was, met valse papieren, in het hol van de leeuw.
In april, na de bevrijding, heb ik mij twee maanden bij de Belgiche stoottroepen aangesloten.
Daarna aan het werk in hotel de Keizer te Deventer en in 1947 getrouwd.

Het echtpaar maakt, namens hun wederzijdse ouders, in een advertentie (CBG) hun voornemen bekend van hun huwelijk op Zaterdag 4 oktober 1947 ten stadhuize van Deventer. De inzegeningsdienst in de Grote Kerk van Deventer wordt geleid door dr.A.Steenbeek. De receptie is om 5 uur in hotel de Keijzer. Het toekomstig adres is Keizerstraat 46 in Deventer.

Op 4 oktober wordt in een advertentie (CBG), mede namens de wederzijdse ouders, bedankt voor de vele blijken van belangstelling.

In een advertentie (CBG) delen J.A.Schoneveld en S. Hekkert de geboorte van 2 dochtertjes mee op 22 juni 1948: Johanna Christina en Astrid Geertruida.

In een advertentie (CBG) maakt het echtpaar en Astrid met vreugde en dankbaarheid bekend dat Jan Albert Schoneveld is geboren op 26 maart 1950 aan de Keizerstraat 42 te Deventer.
