Als jong meisje vertrok Johanna van de Wal naar Deventer en diende bij Birnie, op de Brink, bij de Waag, op het laatst als kamenierster. Vervolgens diende ze op huize Beekwolde in Twello, aan de Rijksstraatweg hoek Terwoldseweg. Zij maakte, achter in de stallen en woonhuis, kennis met Antoni Schoneveld wonende aan de Rijksstraatweg op het boerderijtje de Pulvertoren, ressorterend onder het kasteel Kruisvoorde en in 1900 eigendom van Mej. Huisman van de Flierkamp.
