Notes about Anastasia Anasthasie Schneider

Anastasia Schneider was born on February 19, 1867 in Colchester, Vermont. According to the 1880 US Census, she worked in a cotton mill at the age of 13 and was known as "Eliza". After her marriage to Henry Lavallee, she moved to Willimansett and raised her children on Adams Avenue. She later moved to the house on Rivers Avenue and remained there until her death, one month short of her 90th birthday. She lived with her married daughter on the second floor of the house and did the cooking for the family. Whenever anyone became sick, Mémère, as she was known to the grandchildren, would make a concoction of molasses and whiskey. This would be swallowed, still warm, in several large gulps and was most distasteful to anyone who was unlucky enough to get it. She was an avid knitter and storyteller. She terrified her granddaughter, Jane, with tales of bears in the attic and a man who was hiding in the vegetable cellar. She almost never left the house with the exception of her annual visit to her daughter, Nellie, a nun in Nashua, NH. Her turkey stuffing became a family tradition. She also made Cretons de Quebec and graisse de rôti. Anastasia was also known as Eliza and Lizzie. She died with everyone gathered around her bed, singing her favorite hymns.
