"Hiram exhibited many of the characteristics of the original Kites. He was a member of the State Militia before the war, and in 1861 he enlisted in the confederate army. He was elected Captain of Company H, Second Regiment Volunteers, and served gallantly throughout the war. After the close of the war he devoted himself to the peaceful pursuits of a country gentleman, which, after his arduous life in the army, must have afforded him great pleasure. Among his numerous enterprises, he developed the famous Elkton Lithia Springs, which today stands a monument to his progressive spirit."
