Son Joseph died as an infant. Daughter Clara Kathryn was adopted by brother, Peter and wife, Ellen, from Peoria, IL.
Journal Star June 11, 1902. Joe Baker charged with the murder of his stepson Martin and the assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill his other step-son, George at 3504 S. Adams St. Last night was given a hearing this morning before Judge Sucher, at which he waived examination in each case. Under the charge of murder, he was bound over to the grand jury without bail and under the second charge the formality of waiving $5,000 bail was entered on the court records. The crimes were committed at the home of the accused shortly before the midnight hour when the inhuman father fired from outside the building through an open window, striking the elder boy in the top of the head, tearing a ghastly hole through which the brains oozed. Death was instantaneous. The younger boy started to leave the house and as he turned the corner of the building, received the contents of the gun in his left elbow. His wound is not considered serious. After firing a last shot, Baker ran and although a large posse of men with the police started after him it was not until four o'clock this morning that he was apprehended. Officer Webber caught him at South Adams and Washington Sts. He was dodging from corner to corner in dark places and attracted the attention. Joe Baker is a middle-aged man and several years ago, married Mrs. Christopher, who was a widow with two boys. Baker was a sulky tempered man and jealous of his stepsons. Husband and wife had quarreled many times over the boys and He is said to often threaten to kill the entire family. His last threat was made yesterday afternoon. He left the house before supper and returned just before the storm after the family had retired. He knocked at the door, but went to the window and attempted to crawl in however he dropped back and began firing. Mrs. Baker got out of the way but the younger son ran into the inhuman man. The dead man was 18 years of age and the wounded one was eight.
He was sentenced to prison where he died in 1910, buried on those grounds provided. The church records from St. Mary's in Madison, in state that he was baptized Feb 22, 1864. Petri and Susanne Becker were parents. Godparents were Josephus Glermus and Marda Schrall.
