Vrijwel al mijn voorouders van moeder's kant (Johanna Lem) hebben een verleden bij de Maatschappij van Weldadigheid in Zuid-West Drenthe. Dit sociale experiment werd in 1818 door Johannes van den Bosch in deze streek opgestart met de bedoeling om verpauperde gezinnen uit de grote steden in staat te stellen via landarbeid, en met name de ontginning van woeste gronden in dat gebied, een menswaardig bestaan te laten opbouwen. Mijn voorouders werden voornamelijk (rond 1821 en later) in de tweede kolonie, Wilhelminaoord genaamd, geplaatst en het is niet verwonderlijk dat daaruit vele onderlinge verbintenissen zijn ontstaan.
