Egge Jacobs and Martje Siewerts, like so many people from North Groningen, did not have a formal surname, but after 7 Mar 1812 their children called themselves Arkema. This is possibly because Martje's parents lived on "De Arke" near Zijldijk. This farm had played an important role in the Mennonite movement in the 16th century and Egge Jacobs and his wife both came from Mennonite families.
Egge Jacobs also was a Mennonite deacon.
