Josephus is geboren in 1906 in het Belgische Zwijndrecht.


Tijdens de 1e wereldoorlog 1914-1918 is hij samen met zijn ouders en broers gevlucht naar het neutrale Nederland.


Op 14-06-1916 is hij terug te vinden in het Bevolkingsregister van Gilze.


5 jaar later verhuisde het gezin Willemen naar Oud en Nieuw Gastel waar zij op Vrijdag 1-08-1921 aankomen.


Josephus is hier echter niet bij.


In het bevolkingsregister van 16-06-1916 in de gemeente Gilze is te lezen dat hij op slechts 11 jarige leeftijd 22-September 1917 reeds uit de gemeente Gilze is vertrokken en wel naar Zundert (toennog Groot Zundert).


Op 22 September 1917 is hij vervolgens ook aangekomen in Zundert, en op 15 Oktober 1917 is zijn inschrijving terug te vinden in het bevolkingsregister Gestichten Marechaussee 1917 van de gemeente Zundert.


Daarin is ook te lezen dat hij vervolgens op 18 September 1918 vertrokken is van Zundert naar Baarle-Nassau, waar sinds maart 1913 een opleidingshuis voor de Paters van de H.Geest bestond( broeders-noviciaat en postulaat Baarle-Nassau-Grens). Van daaruit is hij vetrokken naar Lier in België. Aan door familie gestuurde anzichtkaarten is te lezen dat hij voor een aantal jaar (1918-1921)verbleef bij "de Paters van de Heilige Geest" aan de Lisperstraat 112 in Lier.


De studie beviel hem waarschijnlijk niet, en hij wilde vroeger eigenlijk altijd politieagent worden. Hij stopte met de studie, maar mocht van zijn vader niet aan een andere studie beginnen. Hij had net als zijn broers de kans gehad, alleen had hij hem niet volbracht.


Hij moest in de bakkerij en de winkel, die zijn vader inmiddels had overgekocht in Oud-Gastel voor 10.000 gulden.


In 1935 kocht hij de zaak met inboedel en klantenkring over van zijn vader voor 6000 Gulden. Zijn broer Cornelis stond mede borg de Hypotheek.
