Eigenaar zaak Schretlen & Helleganger.

Henry verbleef tot juni 1876 (of 1874?, zie bevolkingsregister) in het jongensinternaat Saint Louis te Oudenbosch. Daarna moest hij terugkomen naar Amsterdam om als booschappenjongen te gaan werken in de zaak van zijn vader.

"Wat ik weet van opa Henry is, dat hij een echte koopman was. Hij had eerst een slagerij, die is overgegaan naar de oudste zoon oom Jo! Daar was hij volgens mij best goed mee, want met ongeveer 40 jaar ging deze oom al stil leven in Heemstede (zoals dat vroeger werd gezegd!) Verder heb ik bij de ooms en tantes weinig handelsgeest kunnen bespeuren!
Opa startte later een groothandel in (gebruikte) banketbakkersbenodigdheden (later nieuw) aan de Singel achter het paleis. Dat deed hij samen met een compagnon Schretlen. Deze zaak werd later overgenomen door de man van tante Cor die getrouwd was met Jan Heidtveld afkomstig uit Limburg. Zoon Frans (mijn neef) heeft deze zaak tot zeker 1992 gehad! Ook kocht en verkocht opa opstallen en antiek wat hem geen windeieren opleverde!
Henry was redelijk vermogend. Hij bezat een aanzienlijk aantal huizen in Watergraafsmeer die in de verhuur waren. Oom Jan Heidtveld later neef Frans en een neef van de koude kant beheerden deze onverdeelde boedel. Van de opbrengst hadden de familie een redelijk bestaan!
