Notes about William Dunsire

[52] William, who married Agnes McBean in 1818, is undoubtedly the sixth son of Andrew Dunsire and Agnes Nicol, noted in the parish record as 'coaler in Wemyss Coaliery' in 1820, but then as a collier in Methilhill, in West Wemyss (1831), in Kirkland (1837), finally as a 'bleacher' in Kirkland (1839) - a large bleach-field is shown on eighteenth century maps, on the other side of the River Leven. Agnes, his wife, has a different surname in almost every parish register entry of the baptisms of their children: Hannah McBean/ Ann McBean/ Agnes MacBonn/ Agnes McBone/ McBean/ McBain/ MckBon/ MckBain/ Bones. (A 'bone in Fife dialect would be pronounced as 'bane' or even 'bin'.) Tracing her parentage therefore proved impractical. According to the 1851 census entry, she was born in Markinch; according to the 1861 entry, she was born in Methil in 1798, like William. A descendant, Mr Malcolm Holt, has obtained her death certificate (she died 7APR1867 in Methil, aged 69), on which her father is named as William McBone, but the mother is not known.
