Shaich, Harry 86 July 01, 1925 Dec. 27, 2011 Harry was a life-long activist for peace and social justice. He never slowed down and was busy until the end of his life working for political change, enjoying his extensive circle of family and friends, tending his vegetable and flower gardens, exploring new interests and ideas, volunteering, and walking his faithful dog, Shelby. Born in Scobey, Mont., he grew up in New Jersey and was a Navy pilot-in-training in World War II. He worked as a trainman, teacher and radiological physicist at OHSU. He was an avid hiker, camper, paddler, skier, reader, protester, cook, artist, videographer and do-it-yourselfer. He climbed Mt. Hood, rafted down the Grand Canyon (on his 80th birthday), and camped across Europe and the United States. Other trips included cross-country skiing in Yellowstone National Park, canoeing in Nootka Sound, B.C., and camping in Death Valley. His enthusiasm for life was evident and admired. Harry is survived by his wife, Deborah; children, David, Joel, Michael and Rachel; sisters, Meriom Kastner and Esther Surovell; mother-in-law, Ruth Jacobs; and his many nephews; nieces; cousins; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Gloria (2003); son, Eric (1991); and brother, Joseph. A memorial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Fulton Park Community Center in Portland.
