Nasceu em Congonhas do Campo a 3 de abril de 1805, sendo o quinto filho de Domiciano Ferreira e Maria do Carmo. Faleceu na Fazenda União, da qual era dono, em Leopoldina, a 27 de fevereiro de 1868.
Como oficial de Milícias, bateu-se em favor da legalidade no levante militar de Ouro Preto no ano de 1833. Exerceu vários cargos de eleição popular, presidente da Câmara Municipal em 1860, Comendador Imperial Ordem da Rosa e finalmente agraciado com o título de Barão de Leopoldina, por decreto de 6 de setembro de 1862 (Título de origem toponímica, Leopoldina - o antigo arraial de Feijão Cru passou a vila em 1854 com este nome, em homenagem à princesa D. Leopoldina, filha de D. Pedro II).

Casou a 29 de novembro de 1828 com sua prima Clara Monteiro de Barros Galvão de São Martinho, falecida em sua província natal a 24 de dezembro de 1872, filha do Comendador Manuel José Monteiro de Barros (Irmão de Maria do Carmo M. de Barros, seu tio) e de Inês de Castro Galvão de São Martinho. De seu casamento provêm 9 filhos:
