Quanto ao sogro Cunha Matos, também há pouca notícia. Apesar de seu casamento
na cidade da Bahia, ele aparece como proprietário e morador da Vila Rica em 1733 e 1738,
respectivamente, em requerimentos e provisões relativos ao seu envolvimento na devassa
sobre uma fábrica de moeda falsa nas Minas Gerais, e na qual foi inocentado (1738).6 Como
Alexandre da Cunha Matos também é identificado como guarda-mor, é razoável supor que
o casamento tenha rendido a Manoel José a "herança" do cargo que outrora pertencera ao
sogro, falecido em 1766.
