RONALD RUSSELL, authorGŠ??????Born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. At the age of two his father was sent to Yokohama, Japan where Ronald grew up. After spending twenty years in the Orient, through many eventful times, he came to the U.S. in 1940 prior to WWII. He was always a collector of a variety of things. He became interested in his father's hobby of stamps, not as a collector, but as a philatelic dealer. He exported and imported stamps worldwide. His thriving business was soon interrupted by impending war, and had to leave for the U.S. in 1940. Not until 1974 he was he able to get back into collecting again. Ronald, with his wife and their three children, had been vacationing in Hawaii every year since 1958. They fell in love with the Islands, especially Maui. There in 1973 he met the late Russell Hill who had left busy New York to live in Maui. Each year Ron would see him at the beach and he kept advising Ronald "start collecting Hawaiian coins ... God's always making more babies ... but there's only so many rare Hawaiian coins and tokens." Finally Ronald was persuaded and said "why not!" And that's how it all started. He had never collected coins before, but the following year Russ Hill tried to convince him to write a book about Hawaiian money. "No way," Ronald replied at first..." I have no experience for it." In 1974, together with Donald Medcalf, they started working on a 1978 Hawaiian Money Catalog! In the three years, much of which time he spent in Hawaii. Ronald bought an IBM manual composer and typed up the manuscript. Now in 1990 together with Don they produced their "Second Edition" of their original book. He bought a Mac SE computer (and "Quark Express" program) which he had to learn to master. His wife Ellen's patience, understanding and encouragement during the exhaustive writing and research years made this book possible and lovingly dedicates this work to her.
