1871 : 5 Compton Street, Plymouth, Devon, England: Maurice MITCHELL [sic]/ Grandson [to Barnet MITCHELL]/ Single/ 14/ Scholar/ Sheerness, Kent, England.
16 : 1873 : Followed his uncle, A Mitchell, to Japan. His uncle became owner of J Curnow & Co. (established 1867) when Mr Curnow died. After managing the Yokohama Furniture Depot, he joined his uncle and when his uncle died (abt 1898), Maurice became owner of J Curnow & Co, one of the largset importers and wholesalers of groceries and spirits in Japan.
~1879 : Married Moyo SAITO in Tokyo, Japan.
1906 : Maurice Russell, President of the Jewish Benevolent Association in Yokohama, was appointed as rabbi pro tem by the association and authorized to perform Jewish marriage ceremonies (and other functions) since no rabbi resided in Yokohama. This document of authorization was dated October 15, 1906.
1923 : MauriceGÅ ??????à?????????????/s death was caused by the great Kanto earthquake and subsequent fire on 1 Sep 1923. He had just seen someone off at the pier and had driven back to the bluff in Yokohama when the earthquake hit just before noon. He helped lower survivors over the bluff to the safety of the beach and rescue boats in the harbour. Being somewhat GÅ ??????portlyGÅ ??????à?????????????/ he refused to go down the bluff on a rope and instead headed for the British Naval Hospital grounds to offer assistance. His charred remains were found in the hospital compound and identified from his glasses and contents of his pockets. On 23 Sep the Chaplain from the ship HMS Hawkins presided at the burial of more than 100 British subjects, including Maurice, at the Yokohama foreign cemetery. His obituary appeared in the English language paper - Japan Chronicles on Saturday 29 Sep.
1923 : Buried in Foreign Cemetery, Yokohama, Japan.

Maurice followed his uncle, A. Mitchell, to Japan at age 16. His uncle became owner of J. Curnow & Co. (established 1867) when Mr. Curnow died. After managing the Yokohama Furniture Depot, he joined his uncle and when his uncle died (abt. 1898), Maurice became owner of J. Curnow & Co., one of the largest importers and wholesalers of groceries and spirits in Japan.
