A sad accident, resulting in the death of a fine intelligent lad, named Lewis Chevir, aged ten and a-half years, happened on Saturday at Farley, near West Maitland. On the afternoon of that day, Mr. A. Ashbury, contractor, residing at Farley, was returning from Maitland in a buggy, accompanied by his wife and Lewis Chevir, the deceased. Mr. Ashbury noticed that he had lost an overcoat from the buggy along the road. Mrs. Ashbury suggested that the lad should get down, and go back for it. Her husband, however, remarked that as the road was bad, he would get down and lead the horse back. He gave his wife the reins, got out of the buggy, and took hold of the horse's head to lead him. He had no sooner done this than the horse reared and plunged, and knocked Mr. Ashbury off his feet. Immediately on regaining his footing he ran after the horse and buggy, which were then going towards Maitland, the horse having bolted when he was kicked down. A few yards away he picked up his wife, who had been either thrown out or jumped out of the buggy. She said she was not much hurt, and he then ran towards the buggy, and about forty yards further on he picked up the lad Lewis Chevir, who was unconscious. Mr. Ashbury sent a boy who was passing into Maitland for Dr. Morson, and in the meantime the unfortunate lad was removed to Mrs. Sheely's house in the vicinity of the accident. Dr. Morson, on arrival, found that the little fellow was quite insensible, and blood was coming from one of his ears. Dr. Morson prescribed for him, and ordered his removal to Mr. Ashbury's house. The boy did not regain consciousness, and death took place about half-past eleven o'clock on Sunday morning. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon at Mr. Ashbury's residence, before Mr. A. Vindin, coroner, when the foregoing facts were elicited : Dr. Morson gave it as his opinion that death resulted from concussion of the brain, with effusion on the brain, arising from the accident. The jury found that deceased died from injuries accidentally received by being thrown from a buggy. The lad was a visitor at Mr. Ashbury's house. He was bom at Marseilles, in France. His mother died in France, and under her will, ???600 was to be divided amongst the deceased and three other children, upon one or all of them reaching the age of 21 years.
