Notes about Gregorius Mees

Gregorius Mees. Schreef zich op 26-12-1648 in als student te Groningen. Woonde toen in de Steentilstraat. In 1656 werd hij benoemd tot predikant in Belckum/Berlicum noordwestelijk van Leeuwarden. In 1657 predikant te Kantens in Groningen. Op 26 mei 1661 predikant in de stad Groningen. Doorstond daar het beleg in 1672, waarbij de stal achter zijn huis door een bom werd verwoest en een van zijn twee paarden werd gedood. Op 2 december 1675 werd hij naar Rotterdam "beroepen" als opvolger van Guilielmus Soestius, waar hij op 12-01-1676 als een van de acht predikanten van de Rotterdamsche gereformeerde Gemeente werd "bevestigd". Zijn jaarlijks tractement bedroeg F 958. Hij woonde in de Hoogstraat. Op 15-02-1680 overleed zijn eerste vrouw Rudolpha. Zijn jongste dochter Helena was inmiddels ook overleden. Op donderdag 30 mei 1680 (Hemelvaartsdag) wil Gregorius Mees met zijn 6 kinderen (behalve Talitha), een vriend Melesdijck en een dienstbode op reis naar Dordrecht. Met een 14-pers. roeiboot (eigendom van Jacobus Phenix) wilde men vanuit de Oude Haven (zie afbeelding) de Maas oversteken naar het Tolhuis in Overmaas om daar met "de wagen" verder te reizen. Om 04.30 (!) vertrok men. Aan de overzijde van de rivier aangekomen stak rond 06.00 echter een zware noordwester storm op. De inzittenden raken in paniek. De boot begint te slingeren, schept water en zinkt. Een voor anker liggend Spaans schip biedt hulp en Gregorius wordt bewusteloos uit het water gevist, waarna hij "na een aderlating en een zweetdrank allengs tot zichzelven kwam". De kinderen Allard en Anna alsmede Melesdijck verdrinken, de anderen worden gered. Allard en Anna worden pas op zaterdag 8 juni gevonden. Gregorius treft felle verwijten. Niet alleen wegens "kinderlijcke onbedachtsaemheyt" maar ook "om zich op Hemelvaartsdag met de zijnen te vermaken in plaats van ter kerk te gaan".
Gregorius hertrouwt op 19-01-1682 met Maria de Meij. Een acte van huwelijkse voorwaarden dateert van 31-12-1681. Op 09-02-1688 maken zij bij notaris Dirk Meesters hun testament. Op 22-12-1686 overleed dochter Willemina op negentien jarige leeftijd. Gregorius schreef enige godgeleerde geschriften: 1683: "Melk voor de Nieuwelingen", 1684: "Het Mergh van de Christelijke Catechismus", 1685: "de Gouden Keten der Saligheyt". Op dinsdag 21-09-1694 overlijdt Gregorius, 63 jaar oud en wordt op zaterdag 25 september begraven. Het weduwepensioen van Maria bedroeg F 300 per jaar. Zij overlijdt op 3 maart 1700, 67 jaar oud.
