Notes about Ludolph Tjaerda van Starkenborg

Hij woont als eerste van zijn geslacht op Verhildersum te Leens in 1586, ovl. (ongeveer 62 jaar oud) te Leens op 31 dec 1618 (ma), begr. te Leens.

Hidde en haar man Lulof of Ludolf Tjarda van Starkenborgh van de Dijkumborg bij Garsthuizen gingen vervolgens op de borg wonen, waarmee deze zelfstandig werd van Onsta, waarvan ze tot dan toe een 'dependance' vormde.
Tevens vormt dit de start van een lange periode van bewoning door de familie Tjarda van Starkenborgh. Waarschijnlijk werd het oude steenhuis door het echtpaar verbouwd om het bewoonbaar te maken. Het lijkt aannemelijk dat het Hidde en Lulof financieel niet al te best ging daar zij in 1602 42 jukken land (ca. 21 hectare) moesten verkopen. Beiden stierven in het jaar 1618 en werden begraven in de Petruskerk van Leens, waar hun graven nog altijd te zien zijn.
Verhildersum bestond bij hun dood uit een heerd met hofjes, singels, poorten en grachten.

Vlak voor 1400 en enige jaren daarna was Aylko Ferhildema die ook wel Aylko Onsta werd genoemd eigenaar/bewoner. Daarna kwamen borg en landerijen tot 1821 in bezit van verschillende takken van de familie Tjarda van Starkenborgh (Stachouwer).
De invloed van deze familie en aanverwanten is groot geweest, hetgeen nu nog duidelijk is te zien aan de inrichting van de borg.
Van 1821 - 1861 ging Verhildersum naar de notarisfamilie Van Bolhuis en van 1861 - 1953 naar de familie Frima.
