werd in 1164 door zijn vader, Doeke Martena, naar Italië gezonden, om daar onderwezen te worden. Krijgszuchtig van aard, trok hij met twee paarden naar Duitschland om keizer Fredericus Barbarossa te dienen. Hij klom bij den keizer door zijne stoutmoedigheid en dapperheid in groot aanzien, werd door hem ridder geslagen en tot overste van 10000 paarden benoemd, en kreeg de belofte van met de dochter van den graaf van Stolberg te zullen huwen. Als gezant van den keizer op reis zijnde, werd hij door eene bende met den zoon van den graaf van Anhalt, die de jonkvrouw van Stolberg tot vrouw begeerde, aangegrepen en doodelijk gewond. Een jaar later stierf hij te Milaan, na den keizer elf jaren met getrouwheid gediend te hebben
