Notes about Luke Fowler

Luke was born in 1788 in Sampson Co; moved to Columbus Co. with his family in 1793; lived there his entire life and died there after 1880 when he he was living with his son Laban. He acquired his first land in 1816, 200A on Caney Branch. Through 1841 he added to his share of his fathers land on Skewbow Branch and 50A on Mill Branch, and he dealt inlands as late as 1867. He married Mary (b. 1788) and they had nine children

From the Morning Star, Wilmington, North Carolina, April 28, 1882, from the Whiteville Enterprise, the following:
"Mr. Luke Fowler, one of the oldest citizens of our county (Columbus). He was born on the 8th day of July, 1788, and died on the 20th of last month. He was a consistent member of the Missionary Baptist Church, for many years. He retained his mental facilities until the last."

Luke Fowler, is listed as the head of the following family; 1 male of 5 and under 10 years of age; 1 male of 10 and under 15 years of age; 1 male of 15 and under 20 years of age; 1 male (himself) of 50 and under 60 years of age; 2 females of 5 and under 10 years of age; 1 female of 10 and under 15 years of age; 2females of 15 and under 20 years of age; 1 female (wife) of 40 and unde r50 years of age;
no slaves.

In the 1850 Columbus County, NC, census Luke Fowler, is listed as head of family # 494, with his wife Mary, and 5 children, and a granddaughter.
