Notes about Richard Fowler

Richard purchased his brother John`s Crane Branch patrimony in 1799 prio rto the latter`s departure for South Carolina, and occupied it until the general exodus to Columbus County in 1793, when he and the others sold out to Thomas Peterson. Richard appears in the census of 1790 in Sampson County with a wife and two daughters, a second male over and another under 16. It is difficult to account for a Francis Fowler who figures prominently in Columbus County, and Horry, County South Carolina later unless he is a younger brother living with Richard at census time. There is also an extra woman, who was notin subsequent censuses, who is probably their mother Mary Rollins. There were many Fowler`s of the name of Richard in South Carolina from 1790 on, but the one in Horry County in 1800 and after is clearly our man. He lived in Horry County until late1819, but is gone from the 1820 census and in his place is a widow Janew ho has all the children left over from the 1810 census and three more infants. Evidently Richard`s first wife died just after 1811. Richard`s birth date must lie between 1755 and 1765 from census data, and to have qualified as a landowner in 1779, we may place it between 1755 and 1758,His first wife was nearly the same age.

Their Children were 1: Israel(b.ca. 1784NC) 1f: a dau. (b. ca. 1788) 2f: dau. (b. ca. 1792) 2: JohnA. (b.ca. 1795SC) 3: Eli (b.ca. 1799SC) 3f: dau. (b. ca. 1801); 4: James G. (b. ca. 1803SC); 5: a son
(b. ca. 1806, husband of 1840 widow Nancy); 6: Edmond (b.ca. 1808SC);
7: Thomas, probably (b.1810SC moved to Butler Co, Al.). Following the loss of his first wife in ca. 1811 Richard married 2nd Jane, probably a Grissett, perhaps a Prince, and previously unmarried. They had three more children
3f: dau. (b. ca. 1813) 8: Duncan? (b. 1815SC, was an MD in Butler Co Al1850- on Probably away at school in 1830); 9: Miles (b. 1816SC). In1840 Jane was living with Miles, but in 1850 he was alone. Jane was made co-executor of Richard`s estate May 4, 1820 along with George Grisset tand Nicholas Prince.
When Martha Israel`s widow, died in 1824, she owed money to Jane.

The above by Richard G. Fowler from his book ( A History Of The FowlerFamily Of Southeastern North Carolina).

By the 1800 Waccamaw Co, SC, (Horry Co) census Richard and his brothe rwere the only two Fowler families in that district, Richard along with his brother Peter, are listed on page # 778 of that census. In Richard`shousehold there are listed
