*FAMILY HISTORY OF JANYCE M. ANDERSON
Excerpts from an autobiography written, but not dated by David P.
Anderson. Sent to Janyce M. Anderson,by William David Phillips, Feb.
2000.
"I was Born in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, on my maternal
Grandfather's plantation, July 15, 1868. On myFather's side I trace my
ancestry to the Mayflower through the Adams familyof Massachusetts. Our
branch moved South in early colonial days. I enteredpublic schools in
Solano County, graduating from High School in 1886. In 1883, I endered
the Dental office of Dr. C.W. Savage, as an office boy staying in the
office out of school hours assisting in the laboratory work, finishing,
and polishing plates, etc., so I naturally took up Dentistry.
Compared withtoday, 1886 Dentistry was in its infancy, and many of the
accomplishments oftoday were simply unknown. A short time after passing
the Board, I bought one-half interest with Dr. Savage and the firm became
"SAVAGE & ANDERSON". This partnership continued until 1909, when Dr.
Savage, because of ill health, gave up his practice and moved to Berkeley.
The fee's we got compared with today were certainly "cut rate".
Extractions $.50, under gas $1.50, gold fillings, $1.50 and up, amalgam
$1.00 any size, small ones 6 for $5.00, celluloid plates $10.00,
vulcanite $10.00 and extractions free with plates. At the timewe had
the only nitros-oxide gas outfit in Sonoma County.
I attended thePanama Pacific Dental Congress in 1915. Also in this year
my son, Dr. WestonR. Anderson graduated from P. & S. and became
associated with me. In 1916 Itook a post-graduated course at Columbia
and again in1923 took a course in local and nerve blocking anesthesia in
Philadelphia.
During the past thirtyyears I have seen the various fads and fancies
come and go. I have been content to let my common sense and experience
select what was permanent and useful and reject what I knew would be
ultimately discarded. In October 1938, Iwill have completed fifty years
of active practice.
I was married to Mattie Reid, born and raised near Santa Rosa. Four
children were born to us, three of whom, Dr. Weston R. Anderson,
Attorney Clarendon W. Anderson, and Mrs.Ruth A. Phillips still survive.
Aside from a fairly large practice, I have had many outside interests.
In 1900 I planted the first combination prune andwalnut orchard in
Sonoma County. A number have been successfully planted since.
Afterwards, I became interested in other farming ventures and in 1903 in
connection with a prtner bought a thousand acre grain and sheep ranch in
Vanden, Solano County. This is now the "Golden West Colony". At present
I am part owner of three ranches in Sonoma County.
Believing the church, to bean essential part of community life, since
early manhood I have been a memberof the Santa Rosa Presbyterian
Church. Believing that the fundamental principles of Christianity and
the Golden Rule are essential for real success in life, I have endeavored
to make a practical application of them in my life andpractice."
