George Pressley Anderson attended Furman Uninversity in Greenville, South
Carolina, between 1856-1859.
He enlisted in the 10th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, Company E as a
sargeant July 19, 1861,
at 23 years of age. He rose through the ranks, as Second Lieutenant,
First Lieutenant and finally Captain on July 8, 1862. He wasseverly
wounded, at Kinston, North Carolina in March of 1865. He appears onthe
Register of the Pettigrew General Hospital No. 12 in Realeigh, North
Carolina from March 11, through March 19, 1865. A chronology of Battles
and Skirmishes of the South Carolina Tenth Regiment shows this regiment
surrenderedat Bennett's House, Durham Station, North Carolina on April
26th, 1865 aboutone month after the Captain was wounded.
After his marriage he established his home in South Carolina and was
there engaged in teaching school until 1869,when he came to California
with the John Gotea Pressley family. His wife and oldest son followed in
1870. He was employed as a teacher in Suisun, Solano County,
California. In 1876, George moved to San Jose and was engaged in
teaching for two years. In 1878, he was called to the schools of Santa
Rosaand made principal of the old Davis Street School (now known as
Lincoln School).
It was in this capacity that he rendered a valuable service to the
community until his death in 1887.

"DEATH OF GEORGE P. ANDERSON."
Professor George P.Anderson, who has been ill for some weeks past with
dropsy of the heart, diedat his home in this city Wednesday morning at
10 o'clock. His protracted sufferings were borne with a bravery and
calmness of spirit which has ever characterized him. He served as
Captain in the Confederate Army during the latewar. Soon after the
close of the war he moved to this State and took up hisresidence in
Solano County where he taught school for several years. Some years later
he moved to this city and served as vice-Principal of the High School
until elected Principal of the Davis Street School, the duties of which
position he faithfully and satisfactorily discharged until his recent and
fatal illness. He was a member of the Santa Rosa Lodge I.O.O.F. and also
of theKnights of Honor. The deceased leaves a widow and five children
to mourn his loss besides many friends and relatives, among whom may be
mentioned, his cousin Judge J.G. Pressley. The deceased was a native of
Georgia, aged 48 years, 8 months and 15 days.
