Johannes Schrader solliciteerde vanuit Militaire Dienst bij de Marechaussee. Hij werd (evenals zijn broer Cornelis Adrianus) om die reden in diverse plaatsen gelegerd. In het zuiden kreeg hij (evenals zijn twee broers Petrus Adrianus en Cornelis Adrianus) verkering.
Johannes Schrader werd in 1908 benoemd tot veldwachter in de voormalige Gemeente Maashees en Overloon en ging in 1947 met pensioen.
De inwoners kenden veldwachter Schrader als een lang, schraal figuur in politie-uniform met een "Hollandse" spraak.
Op organisatorisch gebied is hij zeer actief geweest; hij heeft een belangrijk aandeel gehad in de oprichting en organisatie van de Rooms-Katholieke Politiebond Sint Michael en was commissaris van het Rooms-Katholieke Thuisfront.
