Antoon Schrader speelde een zeer actieve rol in het verzet tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog: hij verleende hulp aan onderduikers, vervalste distributiestamkaarten en persoonsbewijzen, op een zo perfecte wijze, dat hij naderhand collega's ging voorlichten over de door hem toegepaste methode.
Op 18 juni 1944 pleegde hij - samen met twee andere verzetsstrijders - een overval op het gemeentehuis van Vierlingsbeek. Op die bewuste dag, verscheen hij bij het gemeentehuis en vroeg de bewaker om de deur te openen. Op zijn teken kwamen de andere verzetsstrijders tevoorschijn. Zij drongen het gebouw binnen en sloten de bewaker op in een kast en namen een stapel persoonsbewijzen en distributiezegels mee.
In het Nederlandsch Algemeen Politieblad, uitgegeven door het Directoraat-Generaal van Politie, van 24 juni 1944, werd om opsporing van deze drie overvallers verzocht. Antoon werd in dit bericht als volgt omschreven: "ambtenaar van den Burgerlijken Stand te Vierlingsbeek, genaamd Antonius Schrader, 24 jaar, forsch figuur, lichtblond haar, lichte regenjas, bruin kostuum, bruine schoenen, draagt bril en loopt iets voorovergebogen."
Antoon Schrader heeft onder meer ondergedoken gezeten in kasteel "De Doornenburg" in de Betuwe. Verder was hij sergeanttolk in het Engelse Leger (1944-1945).
Voorwerpen die hij als verzetsstrijder gebruikte, zoals de tas waarin hij zijn documenten bewaarde, bevinden zich thans in het museum Ghetto Fighters' House, Kibbutz Lohame, Hagetaot in Israël. De oorlog liet diepe sporen bij hem achter.
Na de oorlog was hij onder andere correspondent van het Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau, onder andere voor de Gelderlander, secretaris van het Nederlands Oorlogsgraven Comité in Overloon; bestuurslid van verschillende instellingen en verenigingen, onder andere penningmeester van het Veldhovens Mannenkoor.
Vanwege zijn verzetsactiviteiten, maar ook voor de uitoefening van zijn functie van ambtenaar van de burgerlijken stand en maatschappelijke verdiensten, ontving hij verschillende onderscheidingen en oorkondes; eremedailles in goud verbonden aan de Orde van Oranje Nassau; het verzetsherdenkingskruis; een Britse en Amerikaanse oorkonde.
Antoon Schrader heeft zijn functie als ambtenaar van de burgerlijke stand met verve vervuld. Toch keek hij de laatste jaren van zijn leven uit naar zijn pensioen. "Dan kan ik eindelijk met ma verre reizen maken en mijn stamboom uitzoeken." Helaas mocht dit niet zo zijn; gezondheidsproblemen beperkten steeds meer zijn mogelijkheden. Gelukkig kon hij altijd op zijn vrouw rekenen. Zij was zijn grote steun en toeverlaat. Toen verzorging thuis niet langer mogelijk bleek, is hij twee jaar met toewijding verzorgd in Zorgcentrum Merefelt in Veldhoven, waar hij op 25 februari 2000 is overleden.
