Notes about Peter Shelton

[Hardin Clay Roots.ged]

There is a great deal of confusion on the Shelton and Goare lines...much research needs to be done.

Records of Christ Church Parish Records of Middlesex Co., VA, surname is also spelled "Chelton & Chilton".

Order Book 2, pp 564 Middlesex Co., VA; 05 Sep 1692: ; "Robert Gilham vs Peter Chilton (sic) and wife Abigale".

Peter's will (Middlesex Co., VA WB B-107) in 1718 mentions sons Peter, William, Thomas and Zebulon.  No son Ralph is mentioned, nor dau. Susanna.  Does mention grandchildren Thomas and Susanna, children of son Peter, dec'd.  His widow "Abigale all land during her life, then to Zebulon".  Executors Abigale, Thomas and Zebulon.

Concerning a Susanna SKELTON: Susanna Skelton is said to have married in 1706, Essex Co., VA? to Thomas Meriwether, son of Nicholas, or Welch Meriwether.  Thomas in his will of 1708 (Essex Co.) gives 65 acres to Ralph SHELTON, Ralph also witnesses his will.  Thomas' wife is Susanna.  Essex Co. Order Book has an entry by Thomas Meriwether that lists his importation in 1702 of Ralph Shelton as an indentured servant, plus 6 other persons.  Perhaps Thomas gives the land as he was the benefactor of Ralph.  No known connection between Susanna and Ralph.  No record of marriage for Susanna and Thomas found. ; A dau. Susanna not in Peter Shelton/Chilton's will in 1718.  Another Ralph Shelton lived on the Essex-Middlesex county border and was born 1698 and married Mary Pollard.  No provable connection with this Ralph Shelton.

The Historical Library here has all 8 volumes of  " MAGNA CHARTA ", by John S. Wurts,  the volumes alluded to in the Shelton History . Volume 6 is indeed the volume concerning James Shelton and his descendants. Strange though,  The " Shelton " name was not in the index, apparently missed,  in spite of two pages on the Shelton's.  It does corroborate what is in the Shelton History. ; It does clear up one thing I have wondered about, who the mother of James wife was, it was Susan Rich. It reads " James Shelton, Clerk of York Co. VA from 1714-1716, and a vestryman at St Paul's.  He married Mary, dau of Sir Edward Bathurst of Gloucester, England, and his second wife, Susan Rich, who was born 1615 ". It only mentions one son of James, John of " Currioman " of Westmoreland Co. VA. ; Alas, no where in the 8 Volumes does it mention a Peter Shelton!!.  If we can tie Peter to this family it takes back to the Kings of England!.  Big Deal. Perhaps that is why Peter is said to be a son of this James??. ; Elaine, it does mention Augustine Shepherd, son of Christopher, who had a dau Mary who married John Haggard, son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Gentry Haggard.  They had issue Elizabeth who married Joel Quissenberry.  I think this is part of your family. There is more, including dates, if you don't have this let me know.  I have found another land deed where Peter bought additional land in Middlesex Co. 16 Feb 1697 purchased land from James Dudley.  It does not show acres, but gives the boundaries, which seems to be a large tract, and he paid " Ten Thousands pounds of good swt sented Tobacco and Casque this 16 day of February 1697 ".  That's a lot of Tobacco. Peter must of been a man of means.   Oh where did he come from??.  Patrick Murray (XXXXX@XXXX.XXX)

* Maiden name of Abigail remains an enigma. Middlx Co. Order Bk 2  p. 141,144, and 148  "
Mr. Edmond Chipley imports: Edward, Susanna, and William Chipley, Roneth ? Huthason, Robert Rowse, Prudence Needham, Ann More, ABIGALL King, and Martha Asbary 6 Feb 1687"
"ABIGALL LADEMAN, and Martha Arsberey servants to Edmond Chipsey 7 Jan 1688 ".  "ABIGALL LADYMAN  to bear a bastard child 6 Dec 1690".
This child may of been Peter's son Henry b. 1691.  As no date of marriage is found for Peter and Abigall it is possible that they married shortly after the Dec 1690 date and Henry's birth ca Sep 1691.  Also the Wm CHILTON above as a witness may of been a brother to Peter, or even his father.  Seems strange a relative would be a witness against Peter.  I hope this get to you in some semblence of order. Let me know if it dosen't.  Patrick
