Jacques Martens werd geboren op 16 maart 1906 te Vlissingen. Hij trad in bij de Congregatie van de SVD in 1920 en legde als broeder de eerste geloften af in 1928 op 7 november. In 1947 ging hij naar Indonesië, waar hij als missionaris werkzaam was tot 1979, op Flores en op Java (Surabaja). In die laatste plaats stierf hij op 7 september 1979.
Broeder Berchmans was een man van weinig woorden, maar van vele goede daden. Voordat hij pas op zijn 41ste jaar naar de missie ging, had hij al vele verdienstelijke jaren achter zich in de Nederlandse Provincie, als kleermaker en portier vooral. Zijn wat stuurs uiterlijk verborg een goed hart, een aandacht voor iedereen. Dat kwam vooral naar voren in Surabaja waar hij zich de "huismoeder" noemde van de Missieprokuur en het gastenhuis. Hij voelde met mensen mee. Zijn zorg en belangstelling voorde kleine man, bijzonder onder het personeel, viel op. Het was een eer zijn gast te zijn. Vele missionarissen en vrienden hebben dat ervaren. Zelf kon hij in stilte genieten van zijn planten en bloemen, van muziek of een mooi boek onder het genot van 'n sigaar.
Weinig spraakzaam als hij was, heeft hij veel vrienden en kennissen verbl ijd met zijn rondzendbrieven. Als hij daarin over de hemel
sprak, zei hij: "Ik hoop dat ik daar ook mijn hobbies heb, mijn planten en bloemen vooral." Jacques, we weten wel zeker, dat de
Heer van de Oogst, een Hemel naar je wens zal hebben en je zal ontvangen met de woorden: "Ik had honger en gij hebt Mij te eten gegeven; Ik had dorst en gij hebt Mij te drinken gegeven; Ik was vreemdeling en gij hebt Mij opgenomen ... "
