Gerard werd geboren in Nijmegen op 29 september 1915. Hij legde zijn geloften af in de Congregatie van Scheut op 8 september 1938 en ontving de priesterwijding op 18 december 1943. In 1946 vertrok hij voor de eerste maal naar de missie, naar Lisala in het grote land Zaïre in Afrika. Na een geduldig lijden is Gerard op 23 maart 1992 op "Sparrendaal" te Vught overleden en werd aldaar begraven op 27 maart 1992.
Pater Gerard Martens kwam uit een gezin van 11 kinderen waarvan er 7 voor het religieuze leven hebben gekozen. In het gezin hadden ze geleerd, iets voor elkaar over te hebben. Gerard heeft dat consequent volgehouden, zijn leven lang. Zijn missiewerkis hij begonnen als schoolpater. Al snel kwam de opdracht om als reispater de kleine dorpjes rond een missiepost te gaan bezoeken.
Spoedig werd hem daarna de verantwoordelijke taak opgedragen een inlandse Broedercongregatie te begeleiden. In 1953 werd hij naar Nederland teruggeroepen om als novicenmeester voor de opleiding van Nederlandse Broeders in te staan. Het was zeker geen gemakkelijk leven voor Gerard met al die kortdurende benoemingen achter elkaar. Maar trouw blijven aan het eens gegeven woord, stond bij hem hoog in het vaandel. Hij volgde zijn roeping, welke wegen hem ook werden gewezen. De benoeming in Nederland duurde maar drie jaren. Zo vertrok hij weer naar de missie in 1956. Tot 1976 werkte hij voornamelijk als overste van verschillende missieposten in de binnenlanden van Zaïre.
In dat jaar kwam een einde aan zijn aktief missieleven. Hij werd directeur van het Bejaardenhuis "Sparrendaal", Ook dit werk deed hij met grote toewijding. Bovendien maakte hij zich op allerlei manieren nuttig in de gemeenschap van pators en broeders op "Sparrendaal" temidden waarvan hij leefde. De laatste jaren namen zijn krachten geleidelijk af en na een ziekbed van ongeveer een half jaar is hij gestorven in volle overgave aan God die hij zo trouwen nauwgezet met zijn beste kunnen heeft gevolgd.
Moge hij nu zijn loon ontvangen en rusten in vrede. De familie Martens en de Missionarissen van Scheut danken U oprecht voor uw medeleven en uw gebeden bij het overlijden van pater Gerard Martens.
