~ Achtergrond van de Razzia in Beverwijk en Velsen op 16 april 1944 ~
In maart en april 1944 waren door het verzet liquidaties gepleegd, twee in Beverwijk en twee in Velsen-Noord. Als reactie op die verzetsdaden besloot de Duitse bezettingsmacht een razzia te houden in Beverwijk en Velsen-Noord, met als doel 500 jonge mannen in de leeftijd van 18 jaar tot en met 25 jaar te gijzelen en over te brengen naar kamp Amersfoort. Deze gijzelaars zouden vastgehouden worden totdat de daders van de aanslagen zich gemeld hadden. De razzia was dus een vergeldingsmaatregel voor daden die daarvoor gepleegd waren door het verzet.
Op 16 april 1944 werden van hier 486 jongemannen weggevoerd door de bezetter, per goederentrein vanaf station Beverwijk. Tussen 16 april 1944 en 11 augustus 1944 zijn ongeveer 160 gegijzelden vrijgelaten uit kamp Amersfoort. De overigen werden vervoerd naar Duitsland. Daar moesten zij als dwangarbeider werken voor de nazi's, op diverse plekken. Velen van hen zijn nooit zijn teruggekeerd: 65 jonge mannen zijn door ontbering omgekomen.
