Johannes is op verzoek van de NH kerk te Groningen geplaatst in kolonie verpleging te Willemsoord. Gekomen 21-01-1836, vertrek, gedeserteerd 12-06-1838 (kolonie III v.d. Weerd). Daarna is hij drie jaar als kolonist in dienst geweest bij de infanterie.
Johannes en Grietje kregen bij huwelijk beide vrijstelling van betaling van de leges wegens onvermogen.
