Notes about Frederik ii van Denemarken

Frederik II (Haderslev, 1 juli 1534 – Antvorskov, 4 april 1588) was koning van Denemarken en Noorwegen van 1559 tot zijn dood. Hij was de oudste zoon van koning Christiaan III van Denemarken en Noorwegen en Dorothea van Saksen-Lauenburg. Hij was getrouwd met Sophia van Mecklenburg-Güstrow. Samen hadden ze zeven kinderen.
Frederik II is onder meer bekend geworden doordat hij de Zevenjarige Oorlog begon over de heerschappij van Zweden, dat geregeerd werd door zijn neef, koning Erik XIV. Koning Frederik had erop gerekend dat hij met zijn Duitse huursoldaten vrij snel de oorlog van zijn geestelijk zwakke neef kon winnen, maar kon ternauwernood voorkomen dat hij Noorwegen aan Zweden verloor. De oorlog kostte een fortuin en leverde uiteindelijk niets op.
Na de Zevenjarige Oorlog (16e eeuw) bouwde hij tussen 1574 en 1585 kasteel Kronborg in Elseneur opnieuw op. In 1576 stichtte hij Fredrikstad in Noorwegen. Deze periode was een welvarende voor de Deense monarchie. Frederik was een beschermheer voor de astronoom Tycho Brahe. Hij schonk hem onder andere het eiland Ven, om er een sterrenwacht te bouwen. Na zijn dood werd Frederik opgevolgd door zijn oudste zoon Christiaan (IV). Frederiks dochter Anna van Denemarken trouwde Jacobus I van Engeland, dochter Elisabeth met Hendrik Julius van Brunswijk-Wolfenbüttel, Augusta met Johan Adolf van Holstein-Gottorp en Hedwig met Christiaan II van Saksen. Zoon Ulrich werd bisschop van Sleeswijk.
