Notes about Elisabeth van Valois

Elisabeth van Valois (Fontainebleau, 2 april 1545 - Aranjuez, 3 oktober 1568) was een dochter van Hendrik II van Frankrijk en Catharina de' Medici.

Elisabeth van Frankrijk trouwde op 22 juni 1559 te Parijs met Filips II van Spanje, de zoon van keizer Karel V en Isabella van Portugal. Aanvankelijk was Elizabeth voorbestemd te trouwen met Filips' zoon Karel. Bij de Vrede van Cateau-Cambrésis (1559) werd echter het huwelijk tussen haar en Filips II geregeld.

Ondanks verschillende miskramen schonk Elisabeth het leven aan twee dochters:

Isabella Clara Eugenia (12 augustus 1566 - 1 december 1633), die o.a. landvoogdes van de Zuidelijke Nederlanden werd
Catharina Michaella (10 oktober 1567 - 6 november 1597)
Bij een miskraam in 1568 overleed ook Elisabeth.
