Notes about Margaretha van Valois

Margaretha van Valois (Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 5 juli 1523 - Turijn, 14 september 1574) was de jongste dochter van koning Frans I van Frankrijk en van Claude van Frankrijk. Zij werd na de Damesvrede van Kamerijk in 1529 verloofd met Maximiliaan van Habsburg, maar dit huwelijk ging ten slotte niet door. Haar vader en keizer Karel V kwamen in 1538 overeen dat zij zou trouwen met de enige zoon van keizer Karel, de latere Filips II van Spanje, maar ook dit huwelijk ging niet door, omdat de goede verstandhouding tussen beide vorsten van korte duur bleek. Nadat zowel haar vader Frans I als diens opvolger Hendrik II van Frankrijk zich de nodige moeite voor een bruidegom van voldoende status hadden getroost, huwde Margaretha ten slotte in 1559, derhalve op 36-jarige leeftijd, met hertog Emanuel Filibert van Savoye, de zoon van Karel III van Savoye. Ze kreeg één zoon, de latere Karel Emanuel I van Savoye.
De bruiloft vond plaats op de dag dat haar broer Hendrik II overleed aan de verwonding die hij had opgelopen bij een steekspel. Hij had op zijn sterfbed aangedrongen op een huwelijk zonder uitstel, omdat de bruidegom zich anders zou kunnen onttrekken aan het verdrag dat aan het huwelijk gekoppeld was.
