Notes about Ira Merrill Fry

From the diary of Elder Ira M. (Merrill) Fry in his own hand.
Ira M. Fry, second son of L. J. and Mary E. Fry. Born near Peoria, Illinois in the year of 1903, the 11th day of June moved with the family the year of 1919 to Fowler, Colorado. Where I met Miss Rose Andersen and married her Jan 3, 1925. Joined the church at Ordway, Colorado, Sept 24, 1923; Baptized of Elder W. C. Perdue same day. Licence by Fowler church 1925. Moved to Fowler church 1924, ordained by Fowler church May 1928 by Elder S T Gardner, Deacon, R. L. Bybee, O. F. Riggs, W. B. Symmonds and E. E. Butcher.
We have two boys, Gerald Wayne born May 31, 1926 and Donald Hubert born October 19, 1930
In June 1923 I went to Illinois, my native home for a visit. I believe here I found out who my friends were. (In sermons of Gramp's he said he went back to Illinois to be a boxer, prizefighter. I believe this is when he got boils so bad all over his body he had to turn around and come back. He went into a field of corn along the way and that is when he truly faced God and saw Him.(As much as God will allow, DA) A true Revelation. He was battling his calling and God was the true friend I believe he found. He was ordained to the ministry shortly after this trip.Donna Averill)
He lists churches served as:
Friendship Church, Fowler, Colorado 1928 - 1939
Little Zion Church, Ordway, Colorado 1930 - 1949
Shiloh Church, Kimball, Nebraska 1931 - 1969
Bethel Lamar, Colorado
Kim Mesa View Kim, Colorado 1938 - 1940
Pikes Peak Colorado Springs, Colorado 1936 - 1991 Until Death
First Zion Cozad, Nebraska 1949 - 1951
Clear Creak Delta, Colorado (Olathe) 1947 - 1970
Friendship Denver, Colorado 1950 - 1980
Other churches preached at;
Freewater, Oregon,-Childress, Texas-Oklahoma-Battlecreek, Nebraska-Callo, Missouri Valley-Bentley, Champaign,Illinois-Arnold, Nebraska-Rupert, Idaho-Mission Valley, Iowa-Hatton, Kansas-Clovis, Hobbs, Portalles, Artisva, Roswell, New Mexico- Amarillo, Fredricksburg, Stratton, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Houston, Dallas, Hobbs, Portaranzes,Andrews, Muleshoe, Anton,Arlington, Texas -

Next to his love of God and Church Gramps loved fishing as most know. He also copyrighted a fishing lure called "Gold Top Double Action Lures". Many varieties of these I still use and they do catch fish. Granny and Gramps kithchen table used to be full of beads of all colors, swivels, and stuff. The kids loved to help him and make more mess, Grannie just shook her head. When not writing articles for the Primitive Baptist periodicals this is what he did. My favorite memories of Gramps are trolling the reservoirs around Colo Spgs, as he drove the boat he would sing"In the sweet by and by we shall meet on that beautiful shore." So beautiful and so deeply from his soul. Every Friday night the Averills would go over to Grannie and Gramps for dinner. So nice after a hard week they cooked up until Gramps had his stroke. The last 5 years or so it was hard for Grannie to get around so Gramps actually did the Fri. night dinners. DA

Grannie and Gramps moved to Colorado Springs Co from Fowler around 1936 if not before because that is when the Pikes Peak Primitive Baptist church was organized. They lived on Fontanero before building their house at 208 N Foote. The farms in Fowler were next to each other and that is how they met. Grannies Spritual upbringing in the Luthern Church, her Dad read the Bible to them every night and she said her mother was a Saint, gave them a strong begining. When they moved to Colorado Springs they had chickens, Dad and Jerry hated cleaning out the chicken coupe!!! He traveled also for Nutrena Feed, being a turkey and chicken expert. He was in the Presidents club and was grateful for the retirement that company supplied to Granny and Gramps. He told them from the get go Church came first and that was allways how it was. Whenever Tim and Tom (Gerald's twins) came to visit Gramps allways took us to the kewl tourist places here in the Springs. DA

Dad said as a younger man that Gramps was very stubborn and strict, as we all age and become more wise his Spirit grew much more graceful and that is how I remember him. His Gentle Spirit with his Great Grandkids and Spiritual Counselor. I miss him very much still. DA

The eyes are the entrance to the soul, although Gramps had the old bottle cap glasses after cataract surguries, when he preached they truly lit up. I believe his favorite book was "Songs of Solomon". The closest thing here on this island of Earth we can relate to the Love of God.
