"Rose Elenore was 19 when she married Ira Fry. They were happily married for 65 years. Ira was a preacher in the Primitive Baptist Church and Rose led the singing. They had 2 sons, Jerry and Don. Jerry married Pinky and they had three boys: twins Tim and Tom, and Gary Don married Jackie and had 2 daughters, Donna and Bonnie.
Rose was the only red head in the family. She was a pretty girl and real feisty! She was the only one of the seven kids who would stand up to Papa and get away with it.
She would often bribe me to go out and get the mail saying she would play dolls with me if I did. I wondered if she knew how frightened I was of snakes and gypsies?
When Rose was 12 and i was 8 Dad bought each of us a new winter coat from Larkins store. Not hand me downs, new. I can remember how proud and happy we were.
When Rose went out with Ira I would go downstairs after everyone retired and stop the clock. Then when Rose came home she would start it again. Dad always wondered why the clock would lose so much time. Obviously Rose and I never told him...
Rose's boys Jerry and Don would spend a lot of the summer with me in Pueblo. One year, Jerry washed a cow to make money for the Fair. I often wonder if Jerry knew that Don listened when he and Pinky were talking on the phone?
Rose cut my hair and put it up in rags at night. She also sewed many dresses for me.
I remember one time when Ted and Rose got into an argument and Ted got out a kitchen knife and chased her. As they went by I tried to take the knife away from him and cut my hand. The Fight stopped and Rose and Ted wrapped my hand and made plans to keep Dad from finding out.
My favorite memories of Grannie:
Almost every word she spoke was of Faith,no matter the topic it started out as it would come back to Faith, never said a bad word about another person, took care of our children while we worked, taught me to crochet and knit and made so many beautiful things, read the Bible from front to back about 50 times, her Bible marks the dates. She never read any book but the Bible, it was always beside her. Grannie was a fisher woman too, Dad, Mom, Bon and I went with Grannie and Gramps on many fishing trips. Dad and Gramps were pretty serious about it but Mom and Grannie, Bonnie and I tramped around and had fun too. Christmas and Thanksgiving were always at their house also, Yummy, she could cook.
Gramps traveled so much for the Church and his work that Grannie and the boys were often on their own. Don and Jerry(Gerald) took good care of their Mother, and as it goes were probably closer to Grannie than Gramps. Dad went on and on about the wonder's of his mother. They had to walk wherever they went, Grannie never did drive or pay a bill. Her patience and love was the foundation of this family, the bond that held it together. Grannie did work during the War at Fort Carson in the kitchen and therefore had Social Security (Security?) She was very proud of that job though and it got her out inito the world to make new friends. She was totally content with her Church family and that was all she really wanted.DA
The songs she called most often in Church were "Blessed Assurance" and "Whispering Hope". She chose "Light by the River" for Gramp's funeral. DA
