Notes about Willem Griep

Willem Griep wordt geboren op 14 oktober 1870 in de herberg van zijn ouders op de kade van Fort Bath, als zoon van Cornelis Griep en Neeltje van Liere. Bij zijn geboorte is zijn vader, herbergier in "Land- en Scheldezicht" te Fort Bath, al 50 jaar oud. Willem heeft een oudere zuster, Wilhelmina Cornelia Griep, geboren 15 augustus 1869.

In 1890 wordt Willem vrijgesteld van militaire dienst, als zijnde de enige wettige zoon in het gezin. In 1900 wordt hij "winkelier" genoemd. In april 1901 wordt hij benoemd tot lid van de gemeenteraad van Rilland-Bath, en gaat hij werken als "volontair ter secretarie" op het gemeentehuis

Als de net 16-jarige Adriana Verplanke, dochter van de gemeenteveldwachter van Rilland, zwanger van hem blijkt te zijn, is een huwelijk snel geregeld. Ze trouwen op 27 februari 1896 te Rilland, en op 29 augustus daarop wordt hun eerste kind geboren. Tevoren worden door notaris Johannes Eliza Mulock Houwer te Goes de huwelijkse voorwaarden vastgelegd. Ze gaan een "gemeenschap van vruchten en inkomsten" aan.

 

Willem Griep en Adriana Verplanke krijgen zeven kinderen:

Cornelis (Kees, 1896), Jacob Pieter Jansen (Jaap, 1897), Neeltje (Nel, 1899), Adriana (1901, overleden in 1904), Wilhelmina Cornelia (Mien, 1905), Adriaan Willem (Adri, 1907) en Willem Adriaan (Wim, 1909).

 

In 1899 overlijdt de moeder van Willem, Neeltje van Liere, en erft Willem een aardig bedrag. De erfenis stelt hem in staat zijn kinderen allen een goede opleiding te geven. Opvallend is dat ze bijna allemaal in de geneeskunde terecht komen, terwijl dit vak eerder nergens in de familie beoefend werd. Kees, Adri en Wim studeren geneeskunde, Mien wordt verpleegster, ondermeer in het Wilhelmina Gasthuis in Amsterdam. Nel trouwt met Paul Duinker, die huisarts op Tholen wordt. Alleen Jaap kiest een heel andere richting, hij wordt landmeter bij het kadaster.

 

Vanaf 1901 tot 1909 is Willem Griep raadslid van de gemeente Rilland-Bath, en vanaf 1909 tot aan zijn overlijden in 1933 is hij gemeentesecretaris van de gemeente Rilland-Bath.

In die functie mag hij met zijn gezin wonen in het gemeentehuis aan de Hoofdweg in Rilland.
