was predikant en later argivaris van die NG Kerk in Kaapstad. Sendeling, kerkhistorikus, joernalis en Africana-versamelaar, het hy grootliks daartoe bygedra om ‘n belangstelling wakker te maak in‘n studie van ons kerkgeskiedenis. Hy het skoolgegaan in die dorpskooltjie op Philadelphia. Hy het homself eers bekwaam as onderwyser (1889-1891)aan die Normaalkollege in Kaapstad en studeer daarna(1893-1894) vir een jaar aan die Victoria-kollege Stellenbosch met die oog op sendingwerk. Hy word hoof van die skooltjie op Hermanuspietersfontein (soos Hermanus in daardie jare bekend gestaan het),waar hy dan ook sendingwerk doen saam met sy skoolhouery na hy in 1896 die sendelingeksamen van die NG Kerk slaag om as eerwaarde gelegitimeer te word. Op 12 Maart 1903 word hy georden as sendeling van die gemeente Kaapstad met die Kleurling-wyk Hanoverstraat as werkkring. In 1928 het die NG Kerk hom uit hoofde van sy veelvuldie kerkhistoriese publikasies tot die eerste heeltydse kerkargivaris enredakteur van die jaarboek (almanak) van die NG Kerke in Suid-Afrika benoem – ‘n pos wat hy tot aan sy dood op 31 Augustus1938 beklee het.

Hy ontvang in 1937 ‘n eredoktersgraad in lettere van UNISA in erkenning vir sy kerkhistoriese werk, sy bronnepublikasies en sy Africana-versameling. Tientalle gemeentelike en kerkgedenkalbums, asook joernalistieke stukke, het uit sy pen verskyn. “Hy het ‘n benydenswaardige historiese sin en in meer as een opsig baan hy die weg vir die wetenskaplikebeoefening van die kerkgeskiedskrywing in SA”. Dr C Pama skryf dat Andries Dreyer “inderwaarheid as die eerste professionele heraldikus in Suid-Afrika beskou kan word”.

Sy unieke versameling Africana is tans in die besit van die Universiteit van die Oranje-Vrystaat in Bloemfontein. Sy eerste huwelik was met Dina Maria LE ROUX (oorl 13 Feb 1914), en hulle het twee seuns en ‘n dogter gehad. Hy trou weer met Helena Susanna RAUBENHEIMER en hulle het ‘n seun en ‘n dogter gehad
