Notes about Johann Theodor Gerfers

[doddimp.FTW] [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 14, Ed. 1, Tree #0434, Date of Import: Apr 15, 2001] Johann Theodor and Maria Elisabeth Gerfers Johann Theodor Gerfers was born January 31, 1809, in Dusseldorf-on-the- Rhine, Nierst, Prussia, to Guillaume Gerfers and Marie Madalene Klumkes. Maria Elisabeth was born October 20, 1808, probably also in Dusseldorf. Her parents are not known. Johann Theodor and Maria Elisabeth were probably married in the early 1830's and had five children with whom they immigrated to Texas in 1849: William Peter Gerfers, born March 15, 1837, and who would later marry Martha Smith, then Augusta Leistikow (the widow of his brother Peter Joseph Gerfers), and finally Marie Juergens; Maria Agnes Gerfers, born October 6, 1838, who would later marry Peter Joseph Poss; Theodore W Gerfers, born November 6, 1840, who would marry Catherine Krause; Peter Joseph Gerfers, born November 20, 1846, who would marry Augusta Leistikow; and Friedrich Wilhelm Gerfers, born February 3, 1849, who would marry Albertina Leistikow. Friedrich was an infant of five weeks when his parents left Germany for America. After the family immigrated to Texas, the family maintained their Lutheran faith. Johann Theodor Gerfers became one of the well-known pioneers of Comal County, farming at New Braunfels for about six years. The family then moved to northern Bexar County where Johann Theodor engaged in raising livestock until his death. (Their property would now be located near FM 2696 north of the Charles Anderson Loop and would be part of the Timberwood Subdivision) Johann Theodor Gerfers died December 9, 1873, at the age of 64. Maria Elisabeth Gerfers died about two years later on January 26, 1876, at the age of 67. Both are buried in the Poss-Gerfers family cemetary in northern Bexar County.
